Captain Kassha Nitai

Captain

Position: Commanding Officer
Race: Bajoran
Gender: Female
Age: 40
Eyes: Hazel
Hair: Dark brown
Height: 5'4"
Weight: 115 lbs

Personality and Appearance
Average height, slender (5'4"/115#). Dark brown hair with hazel eyes. Prominent nose ridges. Generally cautious and reserved, but not overly so. In fact, most would describe her deportment as self-protective. She is more than able to take command if the situation warrants, but prefers to take in all the facts first (rarely impulsive). Has strong feelings about forced labor and/or servitude and is almost unable to control her actions in cases of child abuse and similar situations.

Her experience in combat situations is one of her strong points. She is both able and willing to put herself into dangerous situations, which is most likely a testament to her unwillingness to put another in danger she would not face, herself. She also, in such cases, takes charge early. Basically, she'd rather have a bad decision that was forceful than use a whimsical approach. For her, it is a lot easier to deal with losses and other eventualities when the overall situation is well-defined.

Biography

Kassha Nitai (34) is a native Bajoran from the northern province of Ilvian. She was born in 2344 into the slavery (although the Cardassian oppressors would refer to it under different terms) known as the Cardassian occupation.

Early in her life, her work detail's better accomplishment of production quotas for her cell translated to somewhat less harsh treatment and relatively plentiful nourishment.

In 2352, her cell was moved to Setlik III to establish a new labor colony to extract core mineral deposits. Poor equipment and environmental conditions (illness was rampant and took a severe toll on the very young and the very old) caused inevitable production shortfalls, which, in turn, brought harsher treatment: emotional, physical and sexual abuse.

During her sojourn through hell on Setlik III, Kassha witnessed the violent murders (again, the Cardassians would use a different term) of both of her parents, who, in this case, dared to try to teach their daughter that the Prophets, and not the states, were primary. What actually happened that day has never crossed Kassha's lips, but it had two major ramifications. The first was an absolute rejection of Bajoran religion and its culture. The second was that she named herself Kassha Nitai (Bajorans normally invert their names) and has done so ever since. Needless to say, she wears no hola earring and probably never will.

The only saving grace on Setlik III was the fact that the adults in the cell did all they could to educate the young. While inferior to a real education, it served to teach mathematics, history and reading. Furthermore, they did all they could to ensure that the many orphans among them, Kassha included, were afforded the best that could be spared.

2359 saw a better turn for Kassha. Beaten and bleeding from a particularly brutal "indoctrination session" (Kassha would call it rape), as well as practically starving, she was discovered when Federation marines liberated the colony. The then-light-as-paper girl was carried two kilometers by an unnamed marine who'd cried almost the whole way there.

Medical care was rendered and the refugees were relocated to Trill, where Kassha did all she could to excel in her studies. Driven by gratitude for being saved and a desire to return the favor for her rescue, she secured an appointment to Starfleet Academy.

Most of her physical scars were repaired by dermal regeneration, but she still carries many prominent scars on her back. Emotionally, still fears being locked away in dark places. That fear, along with a general distrust of Cardassians, comprise the most notable effects of her childhood experiences.

She has served as communications officer on USS Argos (Miranda class), Chief Tactical Officer (Akula class USS Constantine) and Damage Control Specialist on USS Apollo (Miranda class). After these tours of duty, she was appointed Executive Officer of USS Raider (NCC-42558) and, after eighteen months, was transferred to USS Illustrious (re-named USS Andoria).

When the time came for her to be selected for a minor command, there were no acceptable slots for her to fill. Starfleet Personnel, not wanting to adversely affect their officer's career path, opted to send her for a second Executive Officer tour, this time on a major starbase.

After a distinguished tour on Starbase Sixty, Kassha believed herself to be headed for a twilight tour and subsequent retirement. As such, she was very surprised to have been hand-selected for the command tour that had so long eluded her. Her orders were to report to the new construction ship USS Psamathe (NCC-80124) and assume command.
